Our Vocational Qualifications (VQs) are evidence-based qualifications completed through your day-to-day work. With no exams, you'll be assessed through assignments that reflect your real-world skills and responsibilities. This means you can gain a recognised qualification while continuing to earn.
You will need to be working in a job role, secondment or a voluntary work placement that will allow you to gather the required work-based evidence.
Vocational qualifications focus on practical, work-based learning and are designed to help you develop the skills you need for your role. You’ll complete projects and assignments that demonstrate your ability to apply knowledge in real settings, making VQs ideal for career development.
The Open University offers a range of VQs in areas such as leadership, health and social care, and education. Each qualification is designed with employers in mind, helping you gain relevant skills while you work. You can choose a level that suits your role and future goals.
To register, you’ll need to be working in a role (or undertaking a suitable placement) that allows you to gather work-based evidence. Once you've chosen your qualification, our team will guide you through the application and registration process.
Our VQs are assessed through ongoing assignments rather than exams. Clear policies and structured guidance ensure the qualifications are fair, accessible, and aligned with national standards. You'll be supported throughout your study by experienced assessors.
If you're wondering whether a VQ is right for you, or how it fits around your work, our FAQs can help. We answer common questions about eligibility, workload, time commitments, and how assessments work in practice.
