Like many businesses in the transport sector, Bedfordshire-based bus operator Grant Palmer faces a shortage of drivers. An ageing workforce is a key factor with younger drivers not seeing the driving as a career. This means retention is an issue with small increases in wages enough to see drivers move between operators.
In the coming months Grant Palmer is launching an ‘attraction and retention’ strategy with The Open University (OU), using education as one of the key driver benefits. Eligible drivers will be able to study for a course at the OU which the company will pay for – and this could be for as long as a full degree. They will also be able to pass this benefit to a family member if they do not wish to use it themselves.
