Engineering skills are in high demand. The Open University’s Business Barometer 2025 report found that 58% of engineering and construction employers reported a skills shortage. Leaders reported the main impacts of these shortages are increased workload for other staff (44%), reduced productivity (31%), reduced capability (29%), while 33% said additional outsourcing was needed to satisfy clients. The impacts of engineering skills shortages in particular stretch beyond businesses themselves and into wider society, with damaging delays and rising costs holding back crucial infrastructure projects. With an aging workforce and competition from other industries and vocations also big challenges for employers, discovering and enabling engineering talent and potential is vital.
The Open University brings together an expert panel of engineering leaders who share their experiences of meeting workforce challenges, and how flexible qualifications can widen the talent pipeline and drive success.
